Efforts to save the Telefunken site sparks the idea of forming a LI Society

With the former Telefunken wireless site in neglect and deteriorating, interested individuals felt that an association with a mission to investigate and preserve Long Island's wireless heritage was imperative.

The Fiends of Long Island Wireless History was conceived and dedicated to help save our fading history of wireless communication.

1996

"The Friends of Long Island Wireless History" chartered by NY State

Application was made and a charter was issued to FLIWH.  Soon after, our organization started to publish a quarterly newsletter "Distant Sparks" that is distributed to the library on Long Island and to all members in good standing.

A exhibit was made at the Long Island Maritime Museum, Sayville.  A plan for local presentation of the group's efforts was created and made available to interested organizations.

Our leadership looked for additional space for a perpetual display and developed a relationship with the Long Island Science Museum.  We now have moved our public display to its new  Riverhead home.

2004

Official change of name to the "Long Island Wireless Historical Society"

To present a clearer image of our mission, the Friends of Long Island Wireless History officially changes its name to "Long Island Wireless Historical Society".

We have set out to improve our exposure by establishing an Internet presence at this site
